Fire doors are designed to slow down a fire should one occur in your property, buying time to escape from a blaze. But what are the facts surrounding fire doors and what is just a myth?
Myth 1: Fire doors are ugly
Having a fire door fitted in your home used to mean a compromise on style but there is a lot more variety now with many XL Joinery standard door designs also available as fire doors. This means that you can still have the seamless look throughout your home by getting a fire door to match the rest of your interior doors.
Myth 2: Fire proof paint makes any door a fire door
If this was true, we’d all be arming ourselves with a paintbrush in the interest of saving money. Unfortunately, a door painted with fire proof paint is not recognised as a fire door and would not comply with British Woodworking Foundation (BWF) standards to meet safety regulations.
Myth 3: I can fit a fire door myself
If you’re a DIY enthusiast, you might have the skills and knowledge to do this but we advise that you get a professional joiner to fit your door as correct fitting is essential for the door to do its job in the event of a fire.
Myth 4: Fire doors will still work if left open
The point of a fire door is to resist smoke and flames for a period of time (typically 30 minutes) to slow down a fire. Forgetting to keep your fire door closed defeats the purpose of having it as it will be just as useless as a standard door! Depending where your door is in your house, you might not keep it closed all the time but it’s essential to ensure it stays shut when you leave the house and when you go to bed.
