7 living room interior design tips

13 August 2018

You spend a lot of time in your living room so it’s worth investing in, not only to make the space more aesthetically pleasing but to ensure the design is comfortable and practical for your lifestyle. Getting the balance of looking amazing and ensuring the room is used to its full potential can be a challenge but we’ve compiled the best living room design tips to help you.

Opt for colour

The colours you choose set the mood for the whole room so it’s important to consider how you use warm tones and cool tones in how you decorate the space. If you don’t want to go too bold with colour, choosing coloured décor or focal points is a great way to tone it down.

Create a focal point

Your living room might already have a natural focal point such as a fireplace or a stunning view which can help pull the focus of the room together but you can create your own with something simple like a statement piece of artwork or furniture.

Open up the space

Modern lifestyle demands mean it is often more practical to have your living room open into your kitchen or dining space. Fitting glazed internal doors is a great way to create better access between rooms and add more natural light.

Get the lighting right

If you want to create an inviting, relaxed space, the lighting you choose is an important consideration. Aim to place light sources such as lamps so that they distribute light to the whole room.

Try a minimalist look

While everyday clutter is unavoidable, you don’t need tons of fussy décor to make your living room look welcoming. The idea of minimalism might conjure up images of stark spaces devoid of personality but that doesn’t have to be the case. You can still play with colour and focal points as mentioned above.

Throw in some patterns

If block colours aren’t your thing, another way to add some vibrancy to your living room is through pattern. Soft furnishings such as cushions and rugs are an easy way to try this out without breaking the bank.

Replace the fittings

If you want to really reinvent the space you have, it’s a good idea to look beyond the furnishings and consider replacing your windows or doors. Doing so can add more light into the room as well as being more economical when it comes to keeping the heat in.

XL Joinery has been helping homeowners improve their living spaces for more than 25 years, supplying and fitting a range of wooden doors and accessories all over the country.
